There are two high speed planetary gears at the motor end of the gear train. The motor drives the shaft that runs through the gear train. The drive shaft has an integral 12 tooth gear on it which is the sun gear for the high speed planetary system. The end of the drive shaft has a spline which connects to the motor through a splined sleeve.
Late Model Drive Shaft and Sleeve with Internal Spline to Connect to Motor
Early model drive shafts have a slot instead of a spline.
Late Model High Speed Planet Gears and Split Carrier Ready for Assembly
This is the high speed planet gear assembly. The larger planet gear meshes with a ring gear in the bottom case.
The smaller gear meshes with the small bell gear.
Ring gear in bottom case half.
Small Bell Gear
This shows how the high speed planet gears mate with the small bell gear.
The spur gear on top of the small bell gear is the sun gear that drives the low speed planetary system.
